Contact with the Great Life

In the preface of his book SUSILA BUDHI DHARMA Bapak explains the conditions in which man can receive a contact with the Great Life that truly proceeds from the One Almighty God.

The Truth is: God is All-powerful and transcends all that is human: for in very truth He is the Creator of mankind and of all the heavens. Therefore man seen in his true condition, is no more than a created thing, powerless before God.

Since this is his true condition , no man, for all the strivings of his heart and mind, can understand or comprehend the Nature of the Power of God. This is why not a few people, seeking by their own efforts to find the way to enter into contact with the Great Life, remain stranded upon the path, or, even if not, their spiritual strivings can only lead them, without their soul being aware of it, into byways where they meet only with shadows and fantasies begotten of their own desires and speculations.

The man who seeks to find a form of worship that will bring him into contact with the Great Life needs to put aside imagination and thinking. Under such conditions he can really deprive his passions of their force and submit his human cleverness and human wisdom: which means that he, as a man, submits and surrenders himself with complete sincerity before God who rules within him.

This is really nothing new, for in ancient times men used to follow this path, finding such a contact which could be experienced within. What then is the reason why, in our time, there are not so many people who can receive this contact? The reason for this is that mankind is faced with conditions of life upon earth that change from generation to generation and many are easily influenced and affected by these ever-changing conditions. This has been especially so since the intellectual powers of man developed and made progress in the fields of science. This has opened a channel through which the inner feeling of man sinks into the realms of the mind, instead of remaining where it is at peace. In consequence, mankind has eventually become dominated by the mind rather than the peace of the inner feeling or of the inner self, so that now the heart and brain of man are constantly at work and the opportunity for the inner feeling to be at peace scarcely exists at all.

Certainly it is very necessary that men should think; the mind is an important instrument; with this tool man is able to work to fulfil the needs of his life here on earth, so that it becomes better organised. But to attain spiritual consciousness and get into contact with the Great Life man does not need to use his thinking. Rather he should abandon the way of though and imagination.

Thus and thus only is it possible for man to be able to receive a contact that is beyond his comprehension, a contact which arouses a vibration that is experienced within him. It must be evident that the only way to attain contact with the Great Life or with the Power of God can never be other than by man's complete and sincere surrender. Such surrender must not be in word or though only, but must penetrate throughout the inner feeling so that men truly experience that faith, worship and glory belong only to Him who is One and Almighty; that is God.

If this be achieved sincerely, at that very moment a man will feel himself in a state in which he is powerless, yet complete and conscious. In other words he feels himself powerless because the forces of passion, desire and thought have left him, and he feels complete because his inner feeling is now filled with something that comes from the Great Life. And he feels conscious because of the awakening of his human soul.

This is how it is when a man proceeds in the right manner. But if in his efforts to make progress he persists in using his mind because he regards it as an instrument superior to everything else, then he makes it difficult to achieve the possibility of contact with the Great Life.

This truth has often been stated by those in times past who were able to receive the Life Force while here on earth: namely, that the one and the only way for man to draw near to the Power of God is to be quiet in his inner feeling and to be filled with patience, trust and sincerity before God.

This is in fact the basic requirement, for in truth the gifts bestowed by God can only be received by man whose inner feeling is filled with submission, patience, trust and sincerity towards the Greatness of God.
