A glossary of words undefined in the text
Bapak Indonesian word for 'Father' or 'Respected Elder'.
Cilandak: The name of a suburb of Jakarta where Bapak
bought a piece of land and built a compound where many Subud
members from Indonesia and abroad lived. He named the compound
Wisma Subud which means Subud House. Most Subud members refer
to Wisma Subud as Cilandak.
Jiwa: inner-force or the content of the self
Fasting: abstaining from food and drink during the hours
between sunrise
and sunset is the traditional Moslem fast practised during the
Moslem
month of Ramadan. In Subud where the members are not of the Moslem
religion, a fast is often done on the same lines during Ramadan
as a fast from the force of the heart and mind.
Ibu: Indonesian term for "Mother" or "Respected
Lady"
'Id-ul-Fitri (or Eid-ul-Fitri): the festival days that
come at the end of Ramadan.
Kejiwaan (ke-jiwa-an): spiritual
Latihan: an Indonesian word meaning training or exercise.
In Subud, the Latihan really refers to the words Latihan kejiwaan(spiritual
exercise) which is the objective of being opened.
Nafsu: desires, passions (lower life forces of the earth
which serve mankind but if not controlled can domineer).
Rajah: an Indonesian system of writing or drawing prayers
on a piece of paper with the sick person's name on it which is
then burnt and the ashes put into water and drunk daily for several
days.
Ramadan: the Muslim month of fasting from sunrise to sunset.
Prihatin: a practice of self-restraint and self-denial combined
with an attitude of worship of Almighty God.
Selamatan: Indonesian custom of holding a gathering of
family or friends to commemorate an event (births, deaths or anniversaries
etc.) with the sharing of food and prayers.
Sungkum: Javanese custom of paying respect to an elder
or important person.
Testing: A way of obtaining proof or reality of a spiritual
problem.
Wisma Subud: Indonesian word for House of Subud or Subud
House
