As you'll see, our books are mainly English translations of the works of medieval Arabic works of Islamic saints [walis], mosty notably of Shaikh 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani, who died about 900 years ago. I first became interested in doing this work after reading in Hussein Rofe's "Reflections on Subud" that Bapak had told him in the early days that this Shaikh had been given the same gift from Almighty God as had Bapak, i.e. the latihan. The only difference being that the Bapak's revelation had been more complete, because it was accompanied by its own exegisis; whereas that of the Shaikh was within the context of Islam.
Needless to say, reading this aroused an intense curiosity in me to find out more about this man, because as you know, it's a very rare thing for anyone other than the prophets to have been given the latihan directly from God. At the time (back in 1986) I commissioned translations of some of the original Arabic manuscripts I had been able to acquire copies of from the British India Library and other sources. The first work done was a collection of discourses called "Futuh al-Ghaib" [Revelations of the Unseen] and as soon as I started reading them, it was just like listening to one of Bapak's talks. That is to say, it had the undeniable stamp of the latihan on it, and I was profoundly moved as I read them. So, I felt I should share this and have been in the publishing business ever since.
There has always been lack of response when Subud is made available within the Muslim community. Maybe it's true that there is a lack of response when Subud is made available to the members of any orthodox religion, for instance to Christians and Jews too wherever the adherents are orthodox, but be that as it may, it seems that it is only in Indonesia that Subud has taken root among Muslims. So, in each of the Al-Baz books, there is a "message in a bottle" in the form of a Publisher's Preface that describes the interest that has arisen through the connection with Subud and which makes a way for anyone being interested in pursuing the haqiqa rather than just the shari'a to find their way to the latihan. Anyway, if you feel like it, go to the site which is set up in honor of Shaikh 'Abd al-Qadir and go to the selection of discourses from "Revelations of the Unseen" and read a couple of them and see what you think.
