Bapak's First Talk at Coombe Springs 1957

Bapak's first talk at Coombe Springs in June 1957 to the new Subud members, all of whom had just recently been opened. He gives an outline of the direction, principles and aims of the latihan, so that they will not worry about anything, and be able to correct and help themselves and find their way in life. Includes questions from newly opened members about their anxieties and Bapak's replies.

The Inner Feeling

Bapak continues his explanations about the different forces that constantly influence our inner feeling. Drawing four circles he explains the relationship between the physical body, the body of feelings and emotions, the body of understanding and the inner peace or the consciousness of the inner feeling. The vibration that we receive starts in the physical body, repairing what is wrong and then progresses to the second body, and so on. If eventually you can achieve all this, you will appear to be an ordinary person, but you will be penetrated from all directions by the power of the Great Life, which envelops the whole world, both within the universe and beyond it. First Talk to Women

The Lower Forces and the Nafsu

Bapak explains about the four lower forces: the material, the vegetable, the animal and the human, which influence us because human beings possess four passions or nafsu. The four nafsu strengthen our will and our wish to work and should be used as tools, but because of our faults, the nafsu we use most are the strong nafsu which want power, or want more than others, whereas what Bapak calls the 'good' nafsu - the one that surrenders, which accepts and gives way to others - is seldom used. Human beings may look alike outwardly, but they are very different inwardly. It is not the human soul (jiwa) that is different, but they differ in what is exerting pressure in each person's inner feeling.

The Power of God

Bapak explains that the purpose of the latihan is to clear out the errors that are within us all which can only be cleared with the help and power of God. This will not happen without suffering and disturbance, which is why we must truly have faith and worship God within our inner feeling. The material or satanic force constantly disturbs the human heart so that people don't believe in God, so that they can't be true human beings and return to their true position, because it hopes that after death they will become its allies or army. This is why we must always believe in the existence of God and the power of God.

Talk to Men

Bapak explains that in the latihan each part of the human body will shows its individual function and what it needs for its life. This is how you will be able to behave correctly. When each part of the body has been cleansed by the latihan, it will only be able to function as directed by the human force, to do what is necessary and not cause problems for you. Bapak tests parts of the body with a group of men.

The Four Brothers

In the latihan we have to have the courage to leave everything behind and let everything go, to entrust ourselves to God, with complete faith and patience. However, it is not God's will that we should give up the pleasures and activities of this world, because they have been created for human beings and their needs. However, if we can give less weight to them and more weight to our worship of God, in the end we will know how to live in this world, and also how our life will be afterwards. We must also learn to not be disturbed by the four forces that live in a person's heart and want that person always to win, always to be richer than others, always to be better known or cleverer.

The Fruits of the Latihan

Jesus Christ was born into poor circumstances and was uneducated. How could God choose a man like this to be His messenger? How was Jesus able to receive revelations from God? Bapak Plays the Gambang

Bapak playing the gambang. Bapak has asked that this important recording should be used with responsibility. It is best to play it only two or, at the most, three times a month, and if members who first listen to it are women, then the men must wait in another room until after the playing of the tape has ended. In this way there will be no mixing of the movements of the different sexes. In Indonesia, Bapak's gambang tape recording is played very seldom unless really necessary, as for example if there is a member whose heart is not yet calm, or if there is a member who is not yet able to receive and feel the existence of the latihan. In such situations Bapak's gambang tape may be played so that the heart can become calm, and the one who is not yet able to receive movements of the body may become able to move.
